LucasArts & a car company once teamed up to make a TIE Fighter demo

Once upon a time, LucasArts and the American car company Dodge partnered for a demo of TIE Fighter, a 1994 Star Wars video game.

This floppy disk demo recently resurfaced thanks to a new video by YouTube channel Big Box PC Game Collectors.

The demo is especially strange because it requires the user to click through an interactive advertisement for the first generation of the Dodge Neon. After progressing through this ad, the user can then play one level from the game.

Other interesting tidbits pop up in the demo, including a non-finalized logo for TIE Fighter, wonky laser sound effects and recycled music from X-Wing, the 1993 predecessor of TIE Fighter.

As pointed out in the video, a Nintendo Ago forum thread from 2011 indicated that this demo was released as an insert for the now-defunct magazine Computer Gaming World. The demo also stated that the game would ship in spring 1994, but it ultimately wasn’t released until the summer in July.
