Battlefront II captured at 4K looks mightly impressive

Just like the last Battlefront, EA’s Battlefront II shines when it comes graphical fidelity.

The Theed map shown off at EA PLAY certainly excels at showcasing the best Battlefront II has to offer: realistic lighting, detailed textures and high-quality models.

The folks over at Star Wars HQ recently showed off what the game looks like at 4K without the HUD and it’s pretty stunning. Even if you don’t have a 4K screen to view it on, you should benefit from watching it at 1080p because YouTube’s compression won’t downgrade the image quite as much:

Probably the most amazing thing I noticed while playing the game at EA PLAY was just how real the indoor areas feel. The reflective marble textures are especially impressive and the lighting seems almost photo-realistic.

What’s even cooler is that DICE used digital assets from the prequel movies to recreate models for the game. This was a bit different from the last Battlefront, where DICE scanned prop models from the films using a method called photogrammetry.

In IGN’s E3 coverage, Battlefront II producer Paul Keslin noted yesterday that the digital movie assets made it “a little bit easier than having to physically scan everything and then having to do a little bit of work on top of that. We still would have to touch them up a bit because it needs to fit our game. But a little bit easier just because they’re digital assets to play around with.”

Of course, the question remains: How well does Battlefront II run right now in 4K? Well, Digital Foundry answered this question, noting that on EA PLAY’s capture PCs with Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics cards, the game runs a native 4K at around 30 frames-per-second or worse. This is well shy of the 60 frames-per-second a game like Battlefront II would want to hit, but note that the build at EA PLAY is in a pre-alpha state. As such, there’ll likely be plenty of further optimization before the game launches on November 17.

I’ll also be curious to see how the console version holds up on both the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. With Battlefield 1 running natively at 1440p and upscaled to 4K on the PS4 Pro, I’d expect similar or better results with Battlefront II. As the Xbox One X has even more powerful internals than the PS4 Pro, I’d assume the game will run at above a native 1440p on Microsoft’s recently-announced console.

All told, Battlefront II will probably be one of the best looking games when it touches down later this November.
