A new mod brings lightsabers to VR game Robo Recall

It’s always fun to see modders bring Star Wars to games outside the franchise. Star Wars has such a rich and deep universe that it really has a lot to add to many different games.

A latest modding effort adds lightsabers to Robo Recall, a virtual reality game for the VR headset Oculus Rift.

The mod began as a project on the Oculus forums last month. According to the mod’s creator, tonsta31, the project was “made for fun as a challenge from a friend.”

The mod currently focuses on combat set in a hallway in space; however, tonsta31 noted that “the released version was just a small tester where you stay in the tunnel and defend and not go on the stairs, there is ALOT [sic] more content coming very soon!” Regardless of what’s to come with the mod, it looks pretty sharp so far.

There are a few official Star Wars VR efforts out there. For PSVR users, there’s the Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-wing VR Mission, which is available to free for those who own Battlefront and the proper PlayStation equipment. There’s also Trials on Tatooine, a VR experiment for the Valve and HTC co-developed Vive. Finally, Lucasfilm is crafting a VR project focused around Darth Vader, although that’s not out for public consumption just yet.

Robo Recall was released last month by Epic Games (known for Unreal, Gears of War and Infinity Blade). The game retails for US$29.99, but requires both an Oculus Rift and an Oculus Touch. Additionally, an Oculus setup needs a pretty beefy PC.

If you don’t have the compatible VR gear, you can check out gameplay from the mod below:
