HD X-Wing mod gets another gameplay video, new soundtrack remix

The TIE Interceptor in the HD X-Wing mod, XWVM.

XWVM, an HD mod for the 1993 classic X-Wing game, has been in continued development since I last wrote about the project in December.

While no playable version of the mod exists yet, new gameplay footage has been shared by the mod’s lead developer, David Esparza-Guerrero (as played by another on the project, Major Parts):

Esparza-Guerrero hinted on the project’s Facebook page: “You can see (and hear) several new features added since our last video in December. Can you spot them?”

That previous video can be seen on Esparza-Guerrero’s YouTube channel.

Additionally, a soundtrack arrangement for the project was recently crafted by user Laserschwert:

The only unfortunate thing about this mod is that we can’t get our hands on it quite yet. However, Esparza-Guerrero indicated the other day on XWVM’s Moddb page that there is hope for a “a playable demo in the next week or two.” Of course, I’m more than happy to wait until the modders’ get the project to the point where they feel it’s polished enough.

Note that if you do want to give this mod a go once it does release, you’ll need to own a copy of the 1993 title X-Wing. That game can be picked up on GOG.com (it’s actually on sale for US$3.99 through to Monday, March 6 as part of a greater Star Wars games sale). There’s also a version on Steam, but it’s currently at its standard $9.99 price.

I’m definitely very interested in the this project. X-Wing was a little before my time (I grew up on the Rogue Squadron series), but I’ll be checking the game out once this mod becomes publicly playable. The updated models (like the TIE Interceptor above) I’ve seen so far look fantastic and it’ll be interesting to see how some gameplay elements of a nearly-25-year-old game hold up.
