The 1993 version of Star Wars: X-Wing is getting remade in this fan-project

Darth Vader in Star Wars: X-Wing.

Originally released in 1993, Star Wars: X-Wing was one of the first video games in which players got to take control of the Rebellion’s primary starfighter.

Now, thanks to the work of fans and the wonders of the Unity game engine, we may yet be able to play the space combat simulator in full HD via the mod XWVM.

Self-proclaimed X-Wing enthusiast and hobbyist game developer David Esparza Guerrero started this project just over two years ago. The mod will require a copy of X-Wing via CD, GOG.com or Steam once it’s released. Because the Unity game engine supports multiple platforms, Windows, Mac and Linux are targeted for support.

I’ve embedded the latest gameplay video at the end of the post. Especially compared to the original game, it looks really solid. The TIE Fighter model for the mod is decidedly sharp. X-Wing was admittedly a little before my time (I grew up with the Rogue Squadron series), but I’ll definitely be keen to give this mod a go.

While no publically-playable version exists just yet, one of the developers working on the mod wrote on the GOG.com forums that “there is ‘some’ chance” for a playable demo to arrive by Christmas. You can currently purchase Star Wars: X-Wing Special Edition on GOG.com for US$9.99. Steam also sells the game for the same price.

X-Wing originally released in February 1993 for DOS and Windows PCs. It allows players to assume control of an X-Wing starfighter and take part in various missions to aid the Rebellion. An Empire-centric spinoff, Star Wars: TIE Fighter, released a year later in July 1994.

The mod’s development can be followed via either its thread on the GOG.com forums or the project’s Facebook group.
