EW provides potential space-combat clue for Battlefront’s Rogue One DLC

Space combat over Scarif in Rogue One.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story!]

Curious what space combat will be like in Battlefront’s Rogue One expansion?

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we may just have a better idea.

While space-centric scenes have been shown off in movie trailers for Rogue One, no real details emerged regarding this structure orbiting the planet Scarif:

Space combat has also been confirmed to be a part of Rogue One: Scarif’s multi-stage game mode, but again, nothing further is known.

However, a recent article by EW’s Andrew Breznican sheds light on how Battlefront’s space combat might work for the Rogue One expansion.

According to the article, the space structure is called the “Shield Gate” and it guards the planet of Scarif.

“You can see the blue sheen surrounding the entire planet,” said Rogue One co-producer John Swartz. “The shield gate is the security. As Imperial ships and cargo comes through, it punches a hole in the shield so they can pass. The gate officer gives clearances as they give out their call signs.”

Scarif itself, meanwhile, is home to the “the Imperial security complex”, which is the primary base for Director Orson Krennic, the Imperial villain for the Rogue One DLC.

“It’s part of their military industrial complex. It’s not necessarily where the Death Star was constructed, but a lot of military research goes on there,” Swartz said. “That’s why Krennic spends time there. It’s the site of research, structural engineering, munitions and manufacturing, all rolled into one facility.”

The article further draws comparisons to Scarif and Los Alamos, a town where the first nuclear bomb was constructed during World War II.

It’s also worth noting that this battle above Scarif is likely mentioned in A New Hope’s opening crawl:

[…]  Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. […]

Moving into the realm of speculation for Battlefront, perhaps the first phase of Scarif’s game mode will center around the Rebels trying to destroy (or disable) the Shield Gate. Once that is accomplished, the fight will move onto the planet’s surface. Then the Rebels must steal the Death Star plans and escape.
