Dennis Brannvall talks R2-D2, customization in latest interview

R2-D2 in Battlefront

In an interview at gamescom with German YouTube channel PLAY! Dennis Brannvall talked about the upcoming Death Star DLC. In particular, Brannvall talked about R2-D2, who will be a new playable character for the expansion.

The astromech will be featured during the second phase of Battle Station, in which the Rebels must extract R2-D2 from the bowels of the ominous space station.

“We found straight away as we were playtesting him early on how he works so well as a VIP escort,” Brannvall said. “Even as a stormtrooper, when you’re trying to shoot him down, and lock him in place again, you sort of feel bad about it: ‘I don’t want to fire at R2-D2! It’s R2! Why would you want to shoot at him!’ So he just works really well as that VIP because even the stormtroopers are reluctant to really stop him.”

Some speculation: perhaps the “lock him in place again” reveals some details about how the second phase will play out. It’s possible that R2-D2 can’t be completely destroyed; instead he is merely stopped when the Imperials cause enough damage on the droid. Then a Rebel has to go up and activate R2-D2. By doing so, that player then takes control of the droid.

Brannvall also said that they’re planning on “more paid and free content” throughout the year.

“For example, we will be delivering more customization options and a slight overhaul of the customization system,” he said. “All of that will be free of charge. We’re also doing some other cool stuff. Just gameplay balancing, tweaking the flying experience and just general patching and balancing and updating like you’re supposed to do with a live product.”

Brannvall further confirmed that he is not personally working on Battlefront 2, as he is focused on the two upcoming DLCs for this Battlefront. However, he did note that news regarding next year’s game will arrive “eventually.”
